SPIC MACAY celebrates the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi Golden Jubilee Year with its International Convention from June 3rd to June 9th, 2019

SPIC MACAY is a non-profit and non-political movement engaged in preserving our rich and diverse cultural heritage and propagating it amongst the youth. Run by volunteers, SPIC MACAY has been organizing events related to classical music and dance, folk art, crafts etc. through a worldwide network of government and private schools, colleges and other educational institutions since 1977. Just in the last three years, more than 15,000 events were conducted in 700 places across the country and abroad.  More than 50 lakh students, from urban and rural areas, were provided the opportunity to see and hear the most eminent artists of our times.

SPIC MACAY is organizing its 7th International Convention at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, as part of the University’s golden jubilee year celebrations from June 3rd – 9th, 2019. It is an annual congregation of youth from across India and abroad, who spend one week in a unique ashram-like atmosphere.

About 1500 young delegates from India and abroad will be participating in this year’s convention. Concerts by leading exponents of Indian Classical Music – Carnatic & Hindustani, Classical Dance performances, Folk performances, Talks by eminent writers and painters, a Cinema screening  with a discussion, Heritage Walks, Workshops in Classical Music, Dance, Folk Art and Crafts, Yoga, Naad Yoga, and various other activities will be part of the schedule during the convention. The concluding day will have a ‘Classical Overnight’ concert beginning at 8 pm and ending at 6 am the following morning.

Some of the renowned artists who are participating in the Convention are:

Padma Vibhushan Awardees: Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Vidhushi Teejan Bai;

Padma Bhushan Awardees: Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Mishra,  Begum Parween Sultana, Vidwan T V Sankaranarayanan, Dr. Prabha Atre, Shri Shyam Benegal, Vidhushi Saroja Vaidyanathan;

Padma Shri Awardees: Vidushi Malavika Sarukkai,  Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Rashid Khan, Vidushi A Kanyakumari, Guru Ghanakanta Bora Muktiyar, Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, Vidhushi Bharti Shivaji, Smt. Anjolie Ela Menon, Shri Dadi Pudumjee, Shri Abdulgafur Khatri, Shri S Shakir Ali, Smt. Baua Devi;

SNA Awardees – Ustad Baha’ud’din Mohiuddin Dagar, Vidushi Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, Lalgudi G J R Krishnan, Warsi Brothers.

9 Yoga sessions (4am to 7am in the mornings) and a total of 37 Intensives workshops, 9am to 12 noon daily) will also be conducted.

SPIC MACAY has had six International Conventions in the past 6 years at IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and at the IIM Calcutta. In the Convention held at IIT Delhi in 2017, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi,   The Prime Minister’s inaugural address :
